Species you can find in Madeira Island Waters:
Sperm Whale
-
Physeter macrocephalus
We can see these amazing marine mammals around Madeira almost all year round.
Sperm whales use our warm and calm sea to dive and eat, socialise and procreate.
Adult subjects can be up to 17 to 20 meters long!
Usually, we use their water projection to locate and identify them since they need to blow in order to breathe. They present a rough grey-brown body and a big smooth head. Their tail-fin is triangular shaped and we can usually see it popping out of the water as they are diving.
They are able to dive for up to 1 hour and 30 minutes!
